All in all, I’ve hit 22 record stores on the trip so far and there are three more left. It’s been great and I am already thinking about Vinyl Road Rage Part Three…but I’ll save THAT discussion for another day. Now, enjoy some random images from the Chicago to New York City vinyl spree:

IndieWax Records had a tiny little dog that falls in love with each and every person that walks in the door. It was cute. But I was more interested in that pile of vinyl. Does that make me heartless? Or just obsessed?

I remember Not My Son from my days in San Antonio, Texas. Carol Steele, one of the members, got me hooked up with a massive interview (as in, there were five or six guys all talking at once) with the members of Voodoo Glow Skulls during a show at Emo’s in Austin back in the 90s. Then she sort of vanished off the face of the earth and I never saw her again. Always wondered what happened to the band and I was taken down memory lane here seeing this single.

I have a sentimental fondness for the Chicagoland indie record store The Old School. Located at 7446 W. Madison Forest Park, The Old School Records put me back on the collector’s game in 2005 after being out for well over three years. I’ve found more than a few lovely vinyl titles here including part of the Aphex Twin Analord series, Danny Elfman’s Corpse Bride OST, and one of my favorite slabs of vinyl by The Orb, Komplott–which I like to play DJ sets with at half speed and mashup Harold Budd under.

The Old School Records does have one thing going against it–there is a large amount of vinyl on the floor and I’ve given myself plenty of grief on hands and knees crate digging here. I strongly recommend a beer after digging through those floor-based stacks–a muscle relaxant is a very good thing indeed. Ergonomically speaking, The Old School isn’t good on knees or spinal columns more than two decades old.

The Old School has a collection of old cassettes, too. I just so happen to have a cassette deck in my vehicle–the mighty Vinyl Road Rage machine christened last year as the DreadMobile, so this collection would be tempting if I didn’t already have an amusingly large number of dusty old tapes.

I’d rate this shop as a great place for new collectors to start out, especially if you’re looking for post-punk or want to fill holes in your new romantic collection. I also found a small pile of my favorite genre, weirdness on vinyl, and the soundtracks section is worth the spinal injury you’ll get–I scored the soundtrack to A Zed and Two Noughts and some other things I’ve never seen elsewhere. Nice.

Here’s a rarity: a Chris and Cosey project on Nettwerk featuring Monte Cazazza, Boyd Rice, Lustmord, Robert Wyatt, and Coil. CORE, a Conspiracy International Project, has of the guests working with Chris and Cosey on a single track each (by remote with tapes and pre-recorded material delivered to theThrobbing Gristle duo, according to the liner notes) on this seven-cut LP. By far the most intriguing and listenable of the seven is the Coil cut, Feeder.

The Boyd Rice track is easily the weakest entry; Lustmord and the Robert Wyatt collaborations are well done but good as they are, none of the seven cuts truly lives up to the power of Feeder. Nuff respect to the other contributors, but damn…

I scored this recently in excellent condition and am pleased to have found it–anything featuring Coil on vinyl is an especially rare treasure these days. Have a listen to the Coil track from CORE via YouTube…a nice find there, I must say–I didn’t expect to find it lurking, but there it was.

This is by far one of the coolest things for sale here at Turntabling. Otto, or Up With Dead People, is a zombie movie with a few MAJOR twists. The best one is that part of the film is told from the zombie’s point of view. The soundtrack to this zombie movie by Bruce la Bruce is full of amazing electronic and experimental sounds evened out by great tracks by The Homophones and the Living Dead Boys. Appearing on the soundtrack–Pandas of Black Metal, La Jovenc, No Bra, Misty Roses, Eyes and Teeth and many more.

Otto or Up With Dead People is not an easy zombie movie to watch for some who might feel a bit uncomfortable with the more explicit scenes (the sex/cannibalism element is really well done) but it’s an EXCELLENT film. It’s a frequent player in the Turntabling DVD machine and we highly recommend it. The soundtrack is so cool we’re shocked that it’s even available on vinyl these days–thought all these would be have been snapped up ages ago.

The film’s soundtrack is a combination of meditative guitar strumming and more energetic sounds from Alvin, Green On Red, DJ Bonebrake (John Doe’s bandmate in X), Lazy Cowgirls, and many more. The film–a potboiler about a club theft and the local heavies chasing down the most likely suspects)–holds up well and is still fascinating to watch for a variety of reasons. Partially shot in documentary style, the first half hour (after some intro scenes) feels a bit like Penelope Spheeris’s Decline of Western Civilization, but Border Radio is definitely working in its own idiom.

The soundtrack is awesome, and this edition comes with a strip of 16mm film from the movie. We’ve got one solitary copy of this for sale, and we strongly recommend it. The movie was originally released in 1987 and finally got a Criterion Collection release in 2006, which we also recommend…

Gert Wilden’s 60s softcore/erotica soundtrack music on the ultra-sexy Schulmadchen Report OST LP on the Crippled Dick Hot Wax label is just plain awesome. Things kick off with a groovy homage to Canned Heat, and only get funkier from there. (Sample below–you’ll LOVE this if you’re inclined to these sounds…) This album features “combo sounds”–the Hammond Organ, fuzzed out guitars, the grooves you know and love from the 60s.

Schulmadchen Report features liner notes from Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog fame, and seventeen sizzling tracks of hot and sexy numbers from the Schulmadchen Report series, plus a few other choice erotica sounds from related films.

Privilege is a different beast altogether. This movie, starring Paul Jones & Jean Shrimpton, is about cults of personality, manipulation, religion, you name it. Some are rabid fanatics of this film, others say it doesn’t hold up very well. Some critics say that in spite of the flaws of this Peter Watkins film, it–like Punishment Park–does presage some latter-day abuses of power quite well.

The soundtrack is widely praised by those in the know, and the songs that are designed to be bombastic and ridiculous (see the movie already!) are that way be design. The Youtube clip from Privilege below is from a point in the film where the pop star icon has been co-opted by the Church and is now acting as its mouthpiece–hence the crosses and the religious lyrics. If you’re a fan of Privilege (as we are, again, in spite of its flaws) this soundtrack is definitely a must-own. Sadly, there’s only ONE of these in stock here at the moment–first come, first served!
