Vinyl Art by Daniel Edlen

Some vinyl uber-purists might cringe at the idea that record albums are being used to create original works of art rather than take another spin on a turntable somewhere, but let’s face it–there are millions of records everywhere, and not all of them are in pristine condition, know what I mean?

That’s why I love the idea of using vinyl records in art–there’s a landill somewhere that will be lighter as a result, and those of us who love vinyl above and beyond what’s contained in those grooves the needle hits tend to be fans of this stuff.

Daniel Edlen paints on vinyl–portraits that incorporate both the album itself and the cover too, depending on the composition. He paints on commission, for charity, for art showings….there’s quite a body of work on display at Edlen’s site Vinyl Art, these pieces really should be seen to be believed. The level of detail and accuracy in the portraits of Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and many other musical luminaries is pretty impressive.

  1. Daniel Edlen says:

Yeah, I never know how vinyl lovers will react to what I do. At one vinyl show early on I had a guy suggest I paint little flowers along the outer and inner grooves only, so the record could still be played. And plenty of people sneered, literally sneered, as they walked past.

So, thank you so much for digging my work!

    Peace,
    @vinylart

  2. Ras says:

Love! Vinyl Art, especially when used with Stencils and Spray Paint.

However, myself, I’ve created many a gift by melting them into Bowls. People love them! I’ve even had requests.

  3. Joe Wallace says:

It’s VERY tempting to sneer at stuff like this until you think about it for ten seconds–look at any indie record store and you’ll find thousands of records in poor condition for a dollar…there’s no harm in re-purposing albums, it’s not like we’re depleting a natural resource here. Yes, I am digging the artwork!

I haven’t been to one of these events yet, but I am already in love with the Chicago Urban Art Society for doing their quarterly(?) Warehouse Junkies vinyl sale referenced in the video below. In Texas, I was involved with two bands who merged vinyl with art, Crevice and Pink Filth, and it’s [...]

How It’s Made on Making Vinyl Records

May 30, 2011

We continue our reports from Vinyl Road Rage tomorrow–there are plenty of record stores still to come from our road trip–but first, have a look at this fun clip on how vinyl records are made, courtesy of the Science Channel’s How It’s Made show.

Saying The Unthinkable! Vinyl Documentary Film

May 25, 2011

This is a clip from Vinyl, the documentary film about record collectors, hoarders, miscreants, and music lovers in general. In this segment, filmmaker Alan Zweig talks about maybe packing it in, getting a life (huh?) and finding a girlfriend. The most insane moment in the clip is when he intimates that collecting vinyl and having [...]

Omega Music, Dayton Ohio

May 23, 2011

Vinyl Road Rage made a quick trip over to Dayton, Ohio to find Omega Music, a big record shop in a town apparently once known for a much richer selection of indie shops but–I’m told–having suffered through the lousy economy since the insanity of 2008, it’s a lucky thing the survivors are still around.
Omega Music [...]

An outsider might not be able to tell the difference between Cincinnati proper and Pleasant Ridge, Ohio but one thing’s for sure–if you’re at Everybody’s Records looking for vinyl, you won’t care WHERE it’s at as long as you’re there.
Everybody’s Records has a nice collection of vinyl that looks like a typical pile [...]
