Dawn of the Dead Soundtrack LP Back In Stock

Dawn of the Dead album vinyl

We were sold out of this awesome slab of 180 gram vinyl goodness, but we have a new supply of the Dagored reissue Dawn of the Dead vinyl LP. This album is one of our all-time best selling titles and a Turntabling favorite. Dawn of the Dead still packs a punch after all these years–there’s nothing quite like it. For all its influence, no other film (even the remake) has come close to capturing the claustrophobia and comedy of the zombie apocalypse.

Romero may have set the bar with Night of the Living Dead, but for some of us die-hard Dawn fans, this is THE film to see. A movie that takes itself seriously but doesn’t come across heavy-handed, has genuinely funny moments without stooping to the lowest common demoninator.

As for the soundtrack, Goblin seems to be in a strange twilight zone between Suspiria and Tenebre when it comes to the compositions. This album sounds like no other–Goblin uses the synth to good effect here, and while the 4 piece guitar/bass/keyboard/drums approach is the main event here, this one doesn’t sound like a rock combo–unlike the Tenebre soundtrack where it’s clear this is a four piece band. Dawn of the Dead manages to be more than a combo but something short of an orchestral thing. A fun anomaly.

Turntabling has the Dawn of the Deaad original soundtrack vinyl LP for sale while supplies last. This is a new, sealed vinyl record. Get it now for $28 plus shipping.

WTF: Shrinebuilder

WTF bad album art Shrinebuilder

Bad album covers and PR artwork both come in a variety of flavors, but the category “Ill-Advised Band Photography” is one of my favorites. The ones I see where I can hear the band talking to the photographer in my head? Priceless. This is what I heard when I spotted this winner from Shrinebuilder.

“Ok, first, like, we’re not Christian rock even though our name sure sounds like it. Second, like, make our tats really prominent in this photograph, dude. It will distract people from thinking this guy on the left looks like Janeane Garafolo.”

“Now, I’m gonna arrange my hair and hold my chin out LIKE THIS so I look exactly like Viggo Mortensen. We’re big fans of those damn hobbit movies.”

“Yeah, we KNOW these two other guys look like a high school shop teacher and Emo Phillips. Just make us two tattooed dudes look badass and we’ll call it a day.”

“Yes, Janeane Garafolo here has an I-Ching tat. Ain’t that something? He got it because that’s the sound he makes right before we start playing. He kinda hawks up a loogie and goes “eeeeee-shinnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggg!”

“Ok, now take that damn picture and make sure we got our mad faces on first.”

Reader Poll: Where Should Vinyl Road Rage 2 Go?

vinyl road trip 2009 joe wallace

Many of you will remember the Turntabling Vinyl Road Rage road trip we took in 2009, driving from Chicago, Illinois to San Antonio, Texas. I  blogged about a host of indie record stores along the way, and it looks like a spring 2010 version is shaping up nicely. But here’s the big question–where does Vinyl Road Rage #2 go?

The starting line is Chicago, Illinois, of course. But from there it’s anybody’s guess, so I thought I’d throw this one open to suggestions. Please feel free to get in touch directly by dropping me a line on Facebook. I am open to any suggestions at this point, short of looking for a record shop on the moon or in a place I can’t drive to within the continental United States.
