Paisley Babylon Digital Single “Dolly Bird With a Gram of Hash”

The second in our Turntabling Records digital single series. Paisley Babylon recorded this track, Dolly Bird With a Gram of Hash, on New Year’s Day 2011, using two turntables, a MicroKorg, and several analog delays. The track is a unique blend of hallucinatory loops, found sounds and turntablism.

The New Year’s Day recordings are something of a tradition for Paisley Babylon, who got started on the ritual after a 1999 session with Post-Mortem Telepathy that stretched over the entire New Year’s holiday. After that, a symbolic session on New Year’s felt, according to Paisley Babylon’s Joe Wallace, a bit mandatory for having good luck in the coming year.

Dolly Bird With a Gram of Hash was created to “capture the mindset of the girl and hopefully, the listener, after ingesting substances hinted at in the song title.” according to press kit materials for the Paisley Babylon album this track appears on. Could the Paisley record “Songs From the Interstallar Hash Bar Jukebox” be a concept record of sorts?

Hard to say, but if you like Perry & Kingsley, Brian Eno or Nurse With Wound, Dolly Bird With a Gram of Hash might be a worthy investment of a dollar.

Turntabling does plan to offer digital downloads direct from the site in the future, but while we’re developing this feature our digital singles are available for download from Amazon, iTunes and elsewhere.

The free MP3 download of Eibon from The Alpha Wave Variations (copyright 1997 Uncle Buzz/Turntabling Records) is a limited-time download offer. This track also appears on the limited-edition 13 Unusual Tracks compilation given away at Flashback Weekend 2009, along with a few new tracks by Paisley Babylon, plus older songs from GOOP, Post-Mortem Telepathy and Opinion8.

For those familiar with Italian horror film soundtracks, Eibon will definitely ring a bell. The source inspiration for this piece was Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, also known as The Seven Doors of Death. The beginning sequence of the movie is a blend of creepy Italian horror with a bit of Lovecraft thrown in for good measure. Eibon was inspired by the mood of the film, as well as the fantastic boo-hoo surrealist ending. Continue reading Paisley Babylon Free MP3 Download: Retina from The Alpha Wave Variations

Crevice Live at Flight Gallery 2/14

joe-wallace-in-crevice

Paisley Babylon’s Joe Wallace reunites with Crevice for this performance at Flight Gallery @ 1906 S. Flores San Antonio, Texas on Valentine’s Day. This is a special performance by one of the classic Crevice lineups. Featuring James Cobb, Bryan Stanchak, James Sidlo, Jeff DeCuir and Paisley Babylon’s Joe Wallace, this version of Crevice goes back to the band’s roots. Crevice was known for using a combination of mutated jazz sounds combined with theremin, Moogs and other analog synths to create atmospheres ranging from deceptively calm to violently psychedelic.

Before their shocking live debut in 1996, Crevice were obsessively toiling away in the studio, abusing equipment to its limit in search of the perfect headphone trip.

One hundred and fifteen instruments were used on their debut CD–everything from giant Moog-monster insect soundtracks to super-chill acoustic panoramas. Two of the group’s three members were working on outside soundtrack projects at the time, so it’s no surprise that Crevice sounds more influenced by Apocalypse Now, The Shining, 2001, or Forbidden Planet than by any particular rock band.
