There are some Wire fans who hate this record–they think Eardrum Buzz-era Wire is some kind of failure compared to the genius of Pink Flag and Chairs Missing. Turntabling does not fall into this camp at ALL. Eardrum Buzz is one of Wire’s all-time great tracks and the album it’s featured on, IBTABA, is a house favorite. There are two versions of the Eardrum Buzz track floating around out there on vinyl–one is the hyperactive bass version, the other is a more synth-driven take on the same ideas. Round here, both are considered tops.
IBTABA is short for It’s Beginning To And Back Again which does seem a bit wordy for an album cover.
And speaking of covers, artwork and packaging, how can you say no to that great big Mute Records logo on the B-side of this awesome Wire album? Suitable for framing, that is–except it’s better to photograph the record and frame THAT instead, as IBTABA is a great record. Usually band-in-transition albums are a lot more iffy, but this record is solid. Not just solid for an album by Wire, but as an record by ANYBODY.
Just take a listen to Eardrum Buzz–the vid clip at the end of this post–and hear for yourself.
