Is the Record Store Dead?

vinyl1by Joe Wallace

I’m throwing this question out because I’d really like to know what Turntabling readers think (there’s a hint–post your opinions in the comments section!) about the state of indie record stores in America. In the last two years we’ve lost a LOT of good ones, but the ones that have survived seem to be in it for the long haul.

One of my favorite indie record shops, Laurie’s Planet of Sound in my Lincoln Square, Chicago neighborhood, is a good example of what I’m talking about. Recently Laurie’s revamped the store setup–once upon a time CDs were the main event judging from the placement and display of the compact discs. But now the shiny disc has been almost marginalized and vinyl is front and center.

It was a brilliant move and one that was long needed–CDs aren’t totally extinct, but they’re really for people with old car stereos and people resistant to going all-digital. There are enough digi-resistant folks out there that the compact disc will probably limp along for a decade or so more, but the writing is on the wall.

Laurie’s will survive if the local vinyl junkies come out and support. I’m one and I do. But what about the record store in general? Do you think it’s an endangered species? Chicago has more vinyl shops than I can name here-literally. In or near Lincoln Square alone we have Laurie’s Planet of Sound, Deadwax, and until only recently, Metal Haven which died in spring of 2010. Elsewhere in Chicago there is the local chain of Reckless Records shops, Dave’s Records, Dusty Groove America, and the recently-opened Leland Hardware Records.

Are they all running uphill here? I personally think not, partly because of changing business tactics (bravo, Laurie’s Planet of Sound) and partly because of a (painfully slow) economic recovery which keeps trying to happen. And then there’s US. The few, the rabid, the vinyl junkies.

Vinyl Road Rage Tour 2010: Chicago To NYC Itinerary Announced

vinyl road rage two

The first Vinyl Road Rage was Turntabling’s shameless grab for publicity, vinyl records, and the 411 on cool independent record stores between Chicago and San Antonio, Texas. Along the way I hit shops in Springfield, Illinois, St. Louis, Springfield Missouri, Dallas, Austin, OKC, and finally San Antonio itself.

This year we have an equally ambitious itinerary from Chicago to New York City, which includes a lot of side journeys along the way including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Here is a partial list of indie record shops I’ll be hitting and blogging about along the way.

I’m posting this for several reasons–one of the big missed opportunities of the last trip was the chance to meet up with other vinyl junkies en route after the day’s blogging is done and be social. This time, we’re not letting that happen. If you live along the route and would like to recommend a good hangout for live music, good food and drink or other record shops, please consider this an open invitiation to get the conversation started.

Our route includes (but is not limited to) stops at the following:

Michiana Used Music & Media 4609 Grape Road  Mishawaka, IN 46545-8257( 574) 247-1188

Record Revolution
1828 Coventry Road Cleveland Hts, OH 44118-1692
(216) 321-7661

15801 Waterloo Rd Cleveland, OH 44110

11600 Detroit Avenue Cleveland, OH 44102-2320
(216) 221-9200

2136 Murray Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15217

Mr. Mike’s
27 S 3rd St Harrisburg, PA 17101

808 St John St Allentown, PA 18103

239 Bleecker St New York, NY 10014

210 Thompson Street New York, NY 10012-484

With a little luck, we’ll have the KLF blasting the whole way. Get in touch if you don’t see YOUR record store on the list, but would like to…we’d be very happy to do something fun in-store as I’ll be blogging and video-blogging this entire trip.

Would love to do a video shoot with indie music types–bands and stores–ESPECIALLY about their favorite CRAPPY ALBUM COVERS.

Turntabling Wants Your Vinyl

vinyl

It’s true. Since Turntabling has started making the rounds at horror conventions and smaller shows, the demand for tasty, tasty vinyl soundtracks and related goodness seems to have gone way up–at least round here. So I’m happy to announce that I’m in the market for vinyl collections large and small.

What we’re looking for: horror and cult movie soundtracks (just like you see selling here), Morricone, 60s and 70s softcore and euro sleaze soundtracks, French pop, disco cheese from all countries, new wave/post punk from all countries, and anything on WaxTtrax! or Mute records.

Also, anything bizarre or unusual is especially sought after. If you aren’t sure where your records fit into our want list, drop a line (see below) and we can work something out.

What we’re NOT looking for: Country, show tunes, butt rock (Journey, Scorpions, Autograph, Survivor, you get the idea) metal, classic rock, etc.

You can get in touch directly by dropping me a line at jwallace242 (at) gmail dot com. Please include a list of your titles, where you’re located, prices, etc. I’m buying large and small collections so don’t be shy.

Reader Poll: Where Should Vinyl Road Rage 2 Go?

vinyl road trip 2009 joe wallace

Many of you will remember the Turntabling Vinyl Road Rage road trip we took in 2009, driving from Chicago, Illinois to San Antonio, Texas. I  blogged about a host of indie record stores along the way, and it looks like a spring 2010 version is shaping up nicely. But here’s the big question–where does Vinyl Road Rage #2 go?

The starting line is Chicago, Illinois, of course. But from there it’s anybody’s guess, so I thought I’d throw this one open to suggestions. Please feel free to get in touch directly by dropping me a line on Facebook. I am open to any suggestions at this point, short of looking for a record shop on the moon or in a place I can’t drive to within the continental United States.
