Vinyl Road Rage #3 is on the Road

by Joe Wallace

Today is the day–Vinyl Road Rage #3 is on the road. This post was the last thing to do before loading up the Dreadmobile and hitting the road. First stop is Joliet, Illinois where there are two stores waiting to be hit, then it’s down Champaign-Urbana way for more vinyl hunting.

For the uninitiated, Vinyl Road Rage is a cross-country blogging journey in search of indie record stores, vinyl oddities and rarities, and all the discoveries along the way that make these trips fun, surreal and worth the effort. This is the third Vinyl Road Rage, the first was from Chicago to Texas, the second was from Chicago to New York City, and this one is a great big circle around the midwest, hitting six states along the way including Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Today the goal is to make it all the way to Terre Haute, Indiana, where a shop called Headstone Friends awaits, but there are about five or six record stores in between in Illinois to hit.

Can I make it the whole way to Terre Haute? We’ll see. It’s a very ambitious first day to be sure, but should yield plenty of good stuff.

There will be lots of updates, images and other posts at my Facebook page as well as plenty of posting here as time permits. Later today I’ll post an update on Day One of Vinyl Road Rage and review some of the record shops visited so far. OFF WE GO!

Prepping Madly for Vinyl Road Rage #3

Been getting things ready for Vinyl Road Rage Three, the mad dash across six states to find the coolest indie record stores in the USA. There has been much to do, including a stop at the sadly going-out-of-business local Chicago stalwart Deadwax Records, where many New Order and The The 12-inch singles were scored for cheap. It is a real shame that my Lincoln Square neighborhood will be short a record store when Deadwax closes…they were a wonderful part of the community and I shall miss Deadwax greatly.

Back to Vinyl Road Rage. I shall be journeying out of Chicago come Thursday morning, iPhone in hand and behind the wheel of the Dreadmobile, a blue Ford Escape packed with all manner of beverages, empty milk crates for the vinyl finds, and an unhealthy collection of CDs to listen to on the long drives ahead. For anyone who cares about such things, the playlist will include a LOT of dub by Scientist, King Tubby, Super Ape, I Roy, Augustus Pablo…you name it. Plus a lot of Italian Lounge, Manic Street Preachers, Orb, Big Black, Hexstatic, Skinny Puppy, Perry & Kingsley and Pulp.

I’m planning plenty of updates on this trip–more than the previous two between here and  lots of Facebook posting from this trip. If you’re into the FB, join me there for the updates.

It’s going to be a hell of a journey. Join me! My insane six-state vinyl blogfest/roadtrip begins Thursday at 9AM.

My Delicious Spaghetti Western Vinyl Record

Now here’s an obscurity–in 1998, Dagored in association with another Italian company called Abraxis (not sure of the exact connection here but both names appear on the record) released this awesome collection of music from a number of obscure spaghetti westerns including more a couple of Sartana films, one called Buckaroo, and Il Segno del Coyote.

Some complain that Ennio Morricone has no representation on this compilation record, but for SOME of us, that’s actually the selling point of the album–you can find Morricone all day, every day in every record store in the land; what you can’t get so readily are the sounds of Francesco De Masi, Bruno Nicolai, Lallo Gori and others on this album.

If you love spaghetti westerns and can’t get enough of those soundtrack sounds, this album is a treat. Bruno Nicolai, for the uninitiated, sounds a lot like Morricone–and with good reason. He was Morricone’s conductor, so there’s a natural progression and influence in style and tone. If you love Morricone, watch out, Bruno Nicolai will soon become a new source of financial strain as you try to collect all HIS great work as well.

New spaghetti western junkies will also come to love and respect De Masi and the other great names featured here.

To whet your appetite, check out the vid clip at the end of this post for one of the better tracks off this awesome compilation courtesy of a fellow Italian movie obsessive on YouTube! This is one of the Bruno Nicolai tracks from Have A Good Funeral, My Friend…Sartana Will Pay which is represented on My Delicious Spaghetti Western.

Smashing Time Soundtrack Vinyl LP Rita Tushingham Lynn Redgrave

Swinging London…we miss you! It didn’t last very long, but the phenomenon spawned countless movies and even more albums. Smashing Time starred Rita Tushingham and Lynne Redgrave as a couple of fish-out-of-water girls who have just arrived on the scene in Swinging London and try to make the best of having no money and nowhere to go.

It’s a Willy Wonka-style adventure without all the candy and child endangerment. Instead you get sexual coming-of-age, the music industry, and mod parties.

Smashing Time is sort of a cross between a 1967 time capsule and longform Carnaby Street music video. This movie is definitely a source text for the Austin Powers spoofs, and while parts of the movie are fairly insufferable, as a cultural artifact it’s fun to watch. Swinging London collectors and memorabilia junkies should definitely own the soundtrack album.

Turntabling has a copy of the Smashing Time soundtrack for sale first come, first served. This is not a modern reissue in stereo, it’s an ABC Records mono release in Very Good condition. This record does ship overseas, but know that depending on the destination your postage costs may require additional funds. Turntabling ships based on weight and destination, we do NOT inflate shipping costs. Our policy is to refund any postage not required or bill the additional amount needed to ship.
