Sure, Russ Meyer films aren’t for EVERYONE…it takes a certain kind of movie lover to truly appreciate Meyer’s outrageous style. But for those of us who DO love this type of insanity, the soundtrack albums are practically indispensable–not only as artifacts and nostalgia for the drive-in era, but the packaging and presentation itself is pretty damn appealing.
The series of LPs this title belongs to feature gatefold sleeves, a booklet and a LOT of images from these films. Not-Safe-For-Work type images.
The LPs are sadly getting harder to find, but when you DO find them, grab ’em. If you aren’t sure whether this record is for you, have a look at the trailer below for Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! If you aren’t immediately grabbed by this, chances are good the record might…not…be…for you.
But if Tura Satana makes it for you, you need this album. That’s all I’m saying.
It’s true that not everything in the Russ Meyer catalog is as jaw-droppingly cool as Faster Pussycat!, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, or his backwoods Nazi epic, UP! But the ones that work are 100% entertainment.
Meyer was a man who truly understood his audience–which back then included a large number of drive-in moviegoers. And once you get the idea that these movies were made with the idea that they might be viewed from the back seat of an old Rambler or something, it’s a lot easier to understand them in context…but let’s not get all psychobabble-a-rific here.
I sell Russ Meyer soundtracks whenever I can get my hands on them, and if you have any to sell, do get in touch. You can buy Russ Meyer’s Lorna, Vixen, Faster PussyCat! Kill! Kill! Original Motion Picture Soundtracks from Turntabling via the Discogs store. This LP is available first-come, first-served. Get it while you can!
And in the meantime, have a look at the awesome trailer for Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! It’s a stunner.
