Paisley Babylon Presents Mash-Up Found Sound Headphone Trip “TV Party, Radio Riot”

For the uninitiated, Paisley Babylon is the name/project moniker I’ve been working under since 1996 as both a DJ and recording artist. Over at the Paisley Babylon official site, there’s a post of an hour-long mashup/audio sculpture/experimental curated cutup called TV Party, Radio Riot.

I recorded and edited it back in 2001, released it in a limited form in 2002 and it’s been gathering dust ever since. It’s about time it saw the light of day and it’s now available as a free MP3 download for a limited time.

I’m putting things like this out now because I’m getting ready to start recording and producing more found sound/mashup and audio collage programs as part of a project I’m working on. Where it will go, nobody knows, but it’s exciting to be working in audio in this way–not 100% music, not 100% found sound, not all mashups or collage, but a melange of approaches, techniques and disciplines. Christian Marclay is definitely an inspiration here but I aim to take the project far beyond the turntable–thought vinyl does play a very large part in the project.

Tape Record Madness

turntable-tape-record

What happens when you replace the cartridge of a standard turntable and replace it with a tape recorder head? What happens when you create a giant sticky pile of shredded cassette tape on a record platter and spin it on your newly mutated record player? You get this kind of insanity courtesy of F7 Sound and Vision. I have to say, tape manipulation was never THIS bizarre…I love this for reasons I can’t even begin to fathom. You can even hear the results of this mad experiment, though I found myself wishing you could hear snippets of what was actually recorded on the tape as this “played” on the record player. John Oswald, beware! This site also gives you instructions for creating a similar experiment using FLOPPY DISKS.

(Right after I wrote this I found a second Mp3 sample where you CAN hear mutilated bits of what was on the original tapes before they were shredded and mashed like this. Bravo!)

DJ Paisley Babylon Fear Mix for HorrorHound

Since I’ll be attending the HorrorHound con March  27-29 in Indianapolis with the Kitley’s Krypt crew, I thought it would only be appropriate to whip up a special DJ mix in honor of the con…the Spacesuit Sounds FEAR MIX features an exclusive Paisley Babylon mashup/remix–Goblin Vs. Daft Punk. It kicks off a great DJ mix of tunes including stuff from the Blacula soundtrack, assorted giallos, the giallo-obsessed Skinny Puppy, and much more. Download or listen and please don’t forget to support the bands–if you like the trax, download ’em via iTunes or Amazon where available.

As regular readers might guess, I’ve got a huge collection of giallo soundtracks and related sounds, so I figure it’s only a matter of time before I get off my duff and start spinning at Chicago horror events and related outings. It will be great to mix and mash for a new crowd…the last time I did anything so specific there was a nice cult following involved and I really do love playing for that kind of an audience…if you like the sounds presented in the Fear Mix edition of Spacesuit Sounds, by all means get in touch.

(I have very reasonable rates for small and medium-sized events if you’re interested in booking…)

As usual, this DJ mix is made available to promote my work as a DJ as well as the artists played. Copyright holders, if you object please get in touch, removal will be swift.
