Back From Capricon

It was a very interesting weekend at Carpicon XXX–the thirtieth science fiction convention and the only four-day show for sci fi fans in this area. Many thanks to all who stopped by the Turntabling table and picked up hard-to-find vinyl, talked music and other ephemera and made the show a lot of fun to be at in general.

One of the more interesting features of this convention was the concept of party suites–something I haven’t seen at the horror conventions so far. Turntabling may well get involved in organizing a suite at some of these shows to try something new, spin some tunes and throw a monster party to promote the site. Stay tuned, that is something in the works that we’ll give updates on shortly.

It’s great to be back–there are plenty of new titles to be added to the site this week, keep your eyes peeled for those plus the usual run of bad album covers and much more.

vinyl records for sale

Things have been a bit quiet here as Turntabling prepares for its first appearance at Capricon, the Chicago area’s only four-day science fiction conference. It’s an experiment for Turntabling–there’s no telling how many vinyl junkies or genre fans (outside sci-fi) will be there, but it’s a lot of fun running the Turntabling table at shows so it’s an experiment worth doing.

Come visit the Turntabling table at Capricon this weekend, February 11-14 located at the Westin Chicago North Shore:

WTF: Batman For Mature Audiences Only

WTF Batman o Vamos a Gozar album cover

This bad album cover is brain-meltingly perverse in all the right ways. There’s no real commentary on this one, simply because…well, just LOOK at this! It’s a masterpiece of surrealism, OR it’s the dumbest piece of art designed to sell products ever.

The longer I stare at this, the funnier and more incomprehensible it gets. This is the El Topo of album covers. Continue reading WTF: Batman For Mature Audiences Only

Lost Highway Soundtrack CD

Lost Highway Soundtrack CD

Lost Highway is one of the best soundtracks in the David Lynch film catalog. Some Lynch fans will scream “blasphemy!” as Julee Cruise is forever the favorite among the Twin Peaks set, but Lost Highway is something else altogether. From the Angelo Badalamenti tracks to Lou Reed’s version of “This Magic Moment”, Lost Highway does not let up–it’s great from start to finish.

Standout tracks on this include Dub Driving, the fun Mister Eddy Theme, and the Smashing Pumpkins electronica track, Eye

Even the Rammstein tracks fit the bill, and Lynch got some great material out of Marilyn Manson. “Apple of Sodom” is as far away from the scream-and-scrape metallic thud of AntiChrist Superstar-era Manson as it gets.

There’s also some excellent atmosphere provided by Trent Reznor–one track where Lynch said to Reznor, “I want it to sound like snakes coming out of the speakers” is fantastic…in spite of the fact that Reznor’s reply to Lynch was basically, “Leave me alone, I don’t work that way.” I think Lynch got what he wanted, regardless.

The Lost Highway CD is a new, sealed compact disc. Buy it now from Turntabling while supplies last for $15 plus shipping. Overseas shipping on this item is $10.
