Paracinema Magazine

paracinema magazine

I recently discovered Paracinema Magazine courtesy of Mike White’s fun Impossible Funky blog. What a great find! Paracinema is a worthy investment for anybody who loves exploitation, horror, B-movies, and generally unclassifiable cinema. And yes, it’s another subscription to add to your Video Watchdog, Shock Cinema, etc. etc. But damn, what a publication! The blog is full of lengthy, in-depth discussions of everything from The Road to The Road Warrior.

My ONLY gripe with this publication is that a good deal of their back issues are sold out, so I can’t order the stuff I’ve missed, and there is PLENTY. But you can still score several of the seven back issues available. Obsessives, don’t delay, grab ’em while you can. I am really digging Paracinema–so much so that I had to post about it on Xmas day. Issue Seven has a feature on Larry Cohen. I am SO there.

Goblin Television Appearances

This may be old news to some Goblin fans but it never occurred to some of us here to do a YouTube search on Goblin to see what kind of television appearances they made to promote the work they did for Argento and others. And what a treasure trove of retro television this clip is! Cheesy hair, goofy stage presentations (love the red boots, lads) and the Jimmy Page double neck guitar all prog bands were required by law to have in at least one stage of their career arc. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

beyond the valley of the dollsIFC is a wonderful thing. If you missed their recent showings of Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, you owe it to yourself to see it somehow. The movie is utter madness. With a soundtrack that wavers back and forth between hip and laughably square, and a torrent of absolutely ridiculous dialogue (supplied by screen writer Roger Ebert!) this is the ultimate six-pack movie.

Speaking as someone who, as a kid yearned for someone to drop acid in the Brady Bunch’s water supply, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is the perfect antidote to all of that Sherwood Schwartz 60s wholesome television goodness.

How To Start a Mobile DJ Business

The Mobile DJ handbook how to start and run a profitable mobile DJ business

Has anyone read this? It seems like the sort of thing we should be selling or at least discussing here on Turntabling, since the turntable is still a big part of DJing even if you’re running time code vinyl. Truth be told, I’ve never read The Mobile DJ Handbook, and would be very interested to know what experienced pros think of it before I took the leap. Sure, I could buy a copy and read for myself, but I know SOMEBODY out there has to have picked this up at some point.

What I CAN do is to dispense a bit of advice from my own experiences as a DJ–mobile and otherwise. Thinking about taking the plunge? Read on. Continue reading How To Start a Mobile DJ Business
