Super Furry Animals Announce New Album

super-furry-animals
Stereogum reports a new album by Super Furry Animals and a list of release dates between the US and UK:

Digital–16 March on www.superfurry.com, Physical–13 April on Rough Trade Records. 21 April for U.S. release. No word on vinyl, though. Bah humbug.

The Stereogum clip also mentions the Super Furries have disposed of the ballads for this one. Good news, lads. Turn it up, please.

I am hoping we’re on a quality level with Radiator and Outspaced here. Below, behold a classic Super Furries moment with “The Man Don’t Give a F*ck”. You’re welcome.

P.S. You get bonus points for spotting the blatant Steely Dan reference here.

Back2Vinyl.com

Tonight I stumbled across Back2Vinyl.com, which features a great list of record collector shows for 2009. I am very pleased to have found this site and the convention list, as I had no idea about the Glass City Record Show in Toledo Ohio February 8 from 10-4.  I’m planning to hit that one, as well as the mighty Austin Record Convention April 3-5 in Texas. The Austin show is said to be the single largest sale of recorded music in America. Even if that’s just rhetoric, I can tell you from experience that it’s a hell of a show and you WON’T be disappointed. I began my vinyl obsession at the Austin show so it’s only fitting that I go back and cover it for Turntabling.net. See you there?

Back2Vinyl.com is a nice resource for vinyl info and resources. Quite tasty—I haven’t had time to go through it all! The links alone require much research.

The Wailing Ultimate: Homestead Records Compilation Album

the-wailing-ultimate-homestead-records

Does anyone else even remember this one? In 1987, Homestead Records put out this hit-and-miss vinyl compilation, The Wailing Ultimate, featuring a pre-junior Dinosaur, Naked Raygun, and Big Black, plus a few future nobodies and the at-times-underrated Salem 66.

The Dinosaur track is the real reason to own this—“Repulsion” is a fabulous, moody cut that shows J. Mascis doing his thing years and years before anybody really took a shine to him in the mainstream media. Hear him showing off the same whine-n-crunch power long before he picked up a golf club on MTV. This one’s a tough find in some areas, but you can always pick it up used online via Amazon.com from a few nice reputable vendors including the venerable Newbury Comics.

Hating the Legendary Pink Dots: Vinyl Mine

Vinyl Mine ran this post (not recently) about psych indie pioneers The Legendary Pink Dots. I myself enjoy the Dots–selected albums from the mile-long discography–but the pure vitriol against them in this post is so funny and all-consuming that I read it TWICE. I have a healthy respect for anyone who can vent their spleen so completely in pure, unadulterated disgust regardless of subject matter. Sure, Vinyl Mine and I disagree on LPD, but damn, what great fun to read. This one’s a great way to kill a long Friday afternoon at work.

The rest of the blog isn’t 100% vinyl-obsessed, but this is a great read. Recent reviews include Nice Strong Arm where a few brief pokes are taken at Bauhaus and Joy Division, but the thing that makes me keep coming back for more is the post about Neil Diamond.

Great stuff.
