Reader Poll: Where Should Vinyl Road Rage 2 Go?

vinyl road trip 2009 joe wallace

Many of you will remember the Turntabling Vinyl Road Rage road trip we took in 2009, driving from Chicago, Illinois to San Antonio, Texas. I  blogged about a host of indie record stores along the way, and it looks like a spring 2010 version is shaping up nicely. But here’s the big question–where does Vinyl Road Rage #2 go?

The starting line is Chicago, Illinois, of course. But from there it’s anybody’s guess, so I thought I’d throw this one open to suggestions. Please feel free to get in touch directly by dropping me a line on Facebook. I am open to any suggestions at this point, short of looking for a record shop on the moon or in a place I can’t drive to within the continental United States.

horror society b movie madness 2

Join us this Saturday for a night of Horror Society b-movie fun at Chicago’s Portage Theater. Turntabling will have its usual booth at the show and this time around we will have a load of t-shirts courtesy of StrangerTees.com and also the new Ennio Morricone Trilogy/Quentin Tarantino CD in stock this weekend, too.

Did I mention there are new copies of the Escape From New York soundtrack vinyl and Tenebre in stock? They’ll be at the show…the movie line up is great and there are plenty of special guests including Night of the Demons director Kevin Tenney. The door is at 4PM–get there early, stay late.

Turntabling is an avid supporter of the Chicago Horror Society–we love what they’re doing to gather the fans under one roof. Come out and support Turntabling and the Horror Society this Saturday. We’d love to meet you! Details below. You can also check out a trailer for B Movie Madness 2 courtesy of HorrorSociety.com

WTF Bad Album Covers Showdown

WTF bad album covers nofx_heavy_petting_zoo
Some days you just can’t decide…and today is one of those days. Normally only one bad album cover gets featured at a time here, but I found three utterly horrific vinyl LP releases today that not only defy reason with their utter cluelessness, but also transported me temporarily into a completely other dimension of disbelief. I couldn’t NOT write about any of them.

Not even Christian rock is this astonishing. You may be able to find some kind of mental acrobatics going on for a born-again record label to be able to justify a band like Stryper combining their gender-bendy spandex-n-sexual confusion vibe with bible verses and (apparently) chaste-living philosophies….but no amount of sacramental wine could fog your brain enough to think the following album cover artwork choices made ANY sense at all… Continue reading WTF Bad Album Covers Showdown

Unrezt and Recordings of Thin Consolation

unrezt records

I stumbled across Thin Consolation by accident today after checking out a new Twitter.com/turntabling follower who is part of this Belgium-based record label.

I spent AGES on this site listening to glitchy, electronic wonderfulness including a FABULOUS electronic 12 inch by Odaka called Warm Geometry. I’ve played this six times in a row now. Part of what Unrezt calls the “Pastorale Electronics series”, Warm Geometry is an analog synth dreamy-fest that kicks into some nice percussion-n-bass analog synth action.

I am dying to hear Warm Geometry on vinyl as the gods of stereo intended but the track at Unrezt is a nice experience regardless.

There are other wonderful discoveries to be made at Unrezt including the glitch-happy Cupp Cave (which features a nice sample about zombies on the intro to the track linked here). And I love the description of Cupp Cave’s world, which is inhabited by “improbable vegetarian Texan zombies on Mexican mushrooms, all thumbs and two left feet.”

Unrezt is my new favorite record label (at least for this week)–great stuff from Belgium and more to come.

P.S. The label is Thin Consolation, the website is Unrezt. I am new so I don’t get the distinction between one end and the other…so Unrezt folks, forgive a dumb Yank.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
