I’m not saying a DAMN thing about this album cover except to ask who hates this guy so much that they let him put this photo on the cover without so much as a “Are you SURE?”

I mean, REALLY. This is one of the most cringe-making images used to sell ANYTHING, ever. The name of this record is “I’m Here” but the artwork on this one makes you want to be anywhere BUT here. There have been countless armies of people with bad judgment putting their images on albums for decades, but none so ill-advised or poorly thought out.

It goes without saying that there wasn’t an art director on this…but I hope nobody let this one hit the shelves uncontested. Continue reading WTF: Worst Album Cover Ever? →

Suspiria Soundtrack Vinyl SOLD OUT

The vinyl selection is growing steadily and in the coming weeks you’ll find more delicious soundtracks on wax for sale including some Morricone (the Revolver soundtrack, plus a few others) plus the Escape From New York soundtrack by John Carpenter.

When it comes to Suspiria, here’s a great example of a genre movie that wouldn’t be what it is without the amazing sounds on this LP. Goblin never surpassed this–it’s the Guernica of Italian horror movie soundtracks. Morricone was the master, but Goblin created something here without equal for sheer ferocity and clarity of purpose.

How to DJ Advice

Turntabling (the blog) is all about vinyl–everything connected to the collecting, playing, archiving and culture associated with vinyl.

I know the drive-in culture thing I am so obsessed with in these pages seems a bit of a stretch, but since I cut my teeth with vinyl when these things were growing up right alongside in 70s and 80s culture, it seems a natural to me.

But some days, it’s all about the act of mixing together the tunes and keeping people interested in your mix. The DJ aspect doesn’t get nearly as much face time here, but I do like to dispense a bit of my insider knowledge from time to time.

Today I stumbled across another one of those How To DJ sites, but this one actually had some decent information. Sound advice there, especially when it comes to trying to feel out an audience and know what works and what doesn’t.

My main gripe with how-to-DJ advice is that you can’t really learn how to spin music without DOING it. And then there’s only so far you can go before you need to have an actual audience.
