Electronic Penis Choppers Digital Single: Android Sex Farm

Electronic Penis Choppers sound like a demented picnic between members of The Orb and Richard D. James, with Gillian Gilbert from New Order acting as referee. Don’t ask us what that’s supposed to mean, it’s just the mental picture that comes when Android Sex Farm is on.

EPC is a troublemaking little project from the same studio that spawns Paisley Babylon material. If Paisley Babylon is electronic music for isolation tank expeditions, Electronic Penis Choppers is what you’d want to be listening to on the dance floor after a nice long go on the nitrous oxide dispenser. The Orb, Aphex Twin and fans of The Other Two are all likely to enjoy this track, written at 2AM after a night of driving through Chicago city streets with headlights turned off and the stereo on full blast.

So yes, this is energetic chill-out music. Is that a contradiction? Perfect for post-club listening, Electronic Penis Choppers are carving out their own little niche with hallucinatory, laid back grooves. When you’ve had more than enough to drink but aren’t anywhere near ready for bed, this is the stuff.

You can preview and download the Android Sex Farm digital single from Electronic Penis Choppers via Amazon.com for .99 cents or check out the entire Electronic Penis Choppers album, Sex Music For H.P. Lovecraft on iTunes.

Vinyl Blog to Watch: Office Naps

I’ve been listening to a variety of mellow 45s on the excellent Office Naps vinyl blog, which features a nice collection of 45s uploaded for your listening pleasure. The genres on Office Naps include exotica/space age bachelor pad music, psych, post-punk and new wave, and many more.

Office Naps has been running since 2006 and there is an appropriately massive collection of 45s to listen to. These are obscure enough to make the rabid vinyl-phile collector happy and the music is top-notch regardless of genre. I have to say, this is my current favorite. Office Naps is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Morrissey as Few Have Seen Him Before

There are a million jokes I could make here about Headmaster Rituals, reeling around Morrissey’s fountain, or simply a “You Handsome Devil!”. Instead I’ll simply give credit where credit is due–I discovered this image at the politcally correct International House of Pussy blog. I somehow missed this–it was a seven-inch single released in 2008 in the UK, and while some may think it qualifies as an entry in the WTF series, I will point out that Mister Stephen Morrissey is looking rather buffed out in this picture considering his age. It DOES have the vinyl tie-in I usually require for inclusion in Turntabling, though some might be afraid to look to see whether those are 12-inch singles or 45s. Don’t be afraid, just pretend you are at the doctor’s office. Heh.

Polyvinyl Record Co.

Pampelmoose.com does it again. Thanks to that fine blog, I discovered a great indie vinyl label practically in my own back yard. Polyvinyl Record Co. offers CDs, downloads, but more importantly those delicious 180 gram vinyl platters for most of their releases. This Champaign, Illinois-based label is home to 31Knots, ofMontreal, and Rainer Maria, who I first got acquainted with when I was editing material from SxSW for Gearwire.com back in 06.

Currently, I’m a bit obsessed with the ofMontreal track Id Engager which you can hear as an MP3 at Pampelmoose or pre-order on colored vinyl or download from Polyvinyl. Id Engager is a unique modern disco indie track.

I like ofMontreal’s take on the old mirrorball sounds from the late 70s; this collision of ideas sounds like Studio 54 and Andy Warhol thrown into a blender with the modern indie kids mentality with a dash of ginseng and gaurana. Energetic without being abrasively annoying…this is fun whiteboy disco with great bass playing. Did I mention there’s a little bit of Sparks falsetto going on here? When it’s well done (as it is on Id Engager) it’s pretty great. RECOMMENDED.
