Tomorrow (Saturday Nov. 14) Turntabling will have its booth at the Chicago Horror Society’s Zombie Outbreak film festival at the Portage Theater. Join us at 4050 Milwaukee Avenue at 4PM til late.

Turntabling will have a great big pile of new and used vinyl for sale including Goblin, Morricone titles, Bauhaus, Public Image Limited, the wonderful Twin Peaks soundtrack, Lost Highway, tons more. Some vinyl uber-purists might cringe at the idea that record albums are being used to create original works of art rather than take another spin on a turntable somewhere, but let’s face it–there are millions of records everywhere, and not all of them are in pristine condition, know what I mean?

WTF: Big Bear Doin Thangs

Rap once again snatches the bad album cover artwork spotlight away from Southern Gospel warblers, heavy metal lunkheads, and singer/songwriters. What a misguided pile of conceptual sludge this cover is! Let’s start with the idea that this guy’s rapper name is Big Bear. He’s surrounded by bears, but expects us to infer that he–the only non-bear in the photograph–is actually Big Bear. Ok. Thanks for that. It’s a stretch, but after about ten minutes of thinking about it, wee get it now. You aren’t ACTUALLY a bear that found itself in possession of a working set of vocal chords.

Gotcha.

Now on sale at Turntabling–a double disc compilation of some of Ennio Morricone’s most enjoyable film sounds; Morricone Aromatico. This one is a themed collection, categorized somehow by…scents? Yes–coffee, vanilla, pine (one of the best tracks, we might add) This gimmick is cute, but ultimately meaningless–the tracks speak for themselves and there’s quite a lot here. With a whopping 41 cuts, how can you go wrong?

There are prime cuts from many phases of Morricone’s film career, but the standout tracks include Morricone’s samba sounds (Song 7, disc one, Samba in Tribunale) his work with Argento (Song 18, disc one, Four Flies on Grey Velvet), the moody sounds with vocalists, so much more…

This is a brand new, sealed double disc import CD from the UK and definitely worth the time for a beginner or mid-level Morricone collector. Obsessives and completists will want this if they’re into any and everything with Morricone’s name on it, but if you’ve been collecting for a while you probably have most of these cuts.
