The Rising Storm

My new favorite music blog is The Rising Storm, which has some interesting trivia on the so-called “Live” 13the Floor Elevators album pictured above. I haven’t heard this one, but The Rising Storm recommends this for several reasons including a few covers–one of Buddy Holly’s “I’m Gonna Love You Too” and Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love”.

“Live” had fake crowd sound dubbed over to mask the fact that it was a poorly recorded studio effort, which puts some (me included) off completely, but then again it would be worth one listen at least to hear Roky Erickson’s best Buddy Holly impression.

The Rising Storm also earns points with me for writeups of outside-FM-radioland bands like Death, J.K & CO. and Brave Belt. There’s an entire undiscovered universe out there in psych/rock vinyl…The Rising Storm unearths plenty to obsess over. This is a great, ambitious vinyl blog that should not be missed.

Since I’ll be attending the HorrorHound con March  27-29 in Indianapolis with the Kitley’s Krypt crew, I thought it would only be appropriate to whip up a special DJ mix in honor of the con…the Spacesuit Sounds FEAR MIX features an exclusive Paisley Babylon mashup/remix–Goblin Vs. Daft Punk. It kicks off a great DJ mix of tunes including stuff from the Blacula soundtrack, assorted giallos, the giallo-obsessed Skinny Puppy, and much more. As regular readers might guess, I’ve got a huge collection of giallo soundtracks and related sounds, so I figure it’s only a matter of time before I get off my duff and start spinning at Chicago horror events and related outings. It will be great to mix and mash for a new crowd…the last time I did anything so specific there was a nice cult following involved and I really do love playing for that kind of an audience…if you like the sounds presented in the Fear Mix edition of Spacesuit Sounds, by all means get in touch.

WTF: Truth In Advertising with Krak Attack

For reasons I shall NEVER understand, some performers are obsessed with toilets and asses on their album covers. I broke out the Ouija board and consulted with Sigmund Freud about this, and according to Freud’s ghost the whole thing boils down to a  subconscious desire to sell music with truthful packaging. This record, no doubt, sounds JUST LIKE ASS.

P.S. I couldn’t bring myself to reproduce this album cover any larger than this size. Ick.

Suspiria Soundtrack

It’s easy to understand why some people in the 90s thought that Skinny Puppy frontman Nivek Ogre was involved in the recording of this amazingly loud, creepy and ahead-of-its time soundtrack for Dario Argento’s Suspiria.

The fact of the matter is, this was Goblin and Dario Argento working together after a fashion–no 80s industrial names were attached to this project even if it DOES sound a lot like what Ogre would be doing in Skinny Puppy on tracks like Dig It, Testure, and others.

Suspiria is an amazing, demented fairy tale. The soundtrack, like the film itself, must be taken on its own terms…and what a soundtrack it is! Still sought after, some editions like the Cinevox import CD are surprisingly pricey–especially in the age of digital downloads. Still, the most obsessed of us are willing to shell out, especially if the LP is available. Believe it or not, you can score a re-issue of this for around $25 on vinyl from…are you ready? BEST BUY. It’s currently listed as backordered, but still available.

Check out the American drive-in movie trailer for Suspiria and ask yourself if you can really live without experiencing this at top volume.
