WTF Album Covers: Hello Lovers Roger Nusic Here For You Only

Knowing absolutely nothing about this record other than this wacko-jacko album cover, the first thing that springs to mind when I look at the image is, “I remember THAT SCENE in Cannibal Holocaust…” The liner notes for this Roger Nusic album on CD Baby helpfully mention the contribution of a drummer named Sticky Dave Friendly. With a name like that, can a career in porn be very far away?

Unfortunately for Roger Nusic, the album covers only get creepier from here. Feast your eyes on THIS:

The Mood Mosaic 12 Mondo Porno 12-Inch Vinyl LP

I scored this while out and about collecting last minute vinyl purchases for my Paisley Babylon show at Transistor tomorrow night (Friday October 15 at 5045 N. Clark 8PM). It is chock full of heavy breathing, moaning, and some excellent wacka-wacka funk sounds that you’d be quite right to expect from a piece of vinyl called Mondo Porno.

This is one of a very long series of mood music releases from the excellent Partners In Crime label, who are also responsible for plenty of other Mood Mosaic releases including the highly recommended Hascish Party, which is my favorite of the collection.

I’m a huge fan of the Mood Mosaic series, and the very naughty picture disc for Mondo Porno is no exception–these are some excellent grooves and I’m definitely including them in my performance tomorrow night at Transistor…feast your ears on this!



Vinyl Blog to Watch: Office Naps

I’ve been listening to a variety of mellow 45s on the excellent Office Naps vinyl blog, which features a nice collection of 45s uploaded for your listening pleasure. The genres on Office Naps include exotica/space age bachelor pad music, psych, post-punk and new wave, and many more.

Office Naps has been running since 2006 and there is an appropriately massive collection of 45s to listen to. These are obscure enough to make the rabid vinyl-phile collector happy and the music is top-notch regardless of genre. I have to say, this is my current favorite. Office Naps is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Paisley Babylon Interview on Transistor Radio

If you’re into Paisley Babylon, the Turntabling.net band/turntablism project, don’t miss the Paisley Babylon interview segment featured on this week’s edition of Transistor Radio.

Transistor is an amazing Chicago-based shop selling vinyl, art, books and mixed-media art. I covered Transistor recently as part of the Vinyl Road Rage series and this is definitely one of the hippest new Chicago music haunts in the area.

One of the things that makes Transistor so awesome is their involvement beyond the four walls of the shop with things like their regular Transistor Radio show. As it happens, I’m performing at Transistor as Paisley Babylon this Friday (October 15th, 2010 at 8PM) and I was interviewed in anticipation of the show on Transistor Radio.

Host Rani Woolpert asked a lot of great questions about the origins of Paisley Babylon, how I got into turntablism, mashups and the like. Christian Marclay I am not, but he’s definitely the spiritual godfather of what I’m doing these days as Paisley Babylon with the five turntables, five echo boxes and crates of vinyl…

There are two other guests on the Transistor Radio show besides me–Chicago mixed media artist Damon Locks, whose work (what little I’ve seen) looks amazing, and ditto for sustainable architect and furniture designer Eve Fineman. They’re both well worth checking out. Transistor Radio is quickly becoming one of my favorite Sunday night listening pleasures–now I look forward to Sundays for it, along with my all-time favorite Sunday radio experience Word Jazz with Ken Nordine.

Friends of Paisley Babylon (I’ve always felt uncomfortable about saying “fans”) should definitely have a listen to the Transistor Radio interview with me about PB, but please stay tuned for Locks and Fineman after my segment. Good stuff all round.
