New Vinyl Arrivals at Turntabling: Morricone, Joy Division, Goblin

There is a TON of great new vinyl for sale on the Turntabling Discogs page. Italian soundtrack fans will love the addition of My Delicious Spaghetti Western on the legendary Dagored label, and it’s been a great long while since I had a copy of Ennio Morricone’s La Donna Invisible to offer–it’s one of my favorite soundtracks from the era. I am always on the lookout for more excellent titles from Italy from the giallo, horror, sci-fi and thriller genres. You can never have too many Goblin albums, and Morricone’s work from the 60s and 70s never gets dull.

Turntabling sells vinyl from a variety of genres including soundtracks, goth/industrial, 80s new wave and punk, and just plain rare/obscure titles. I scour the earth to find these, and several times a year embark on cross-country trips to buy entire collections, find weird and outrageous vinyl, and meet my fellow vinyl junkies.

If you have a collection to sell, I’d be very happy to discuss it–but please know that I buy in the genres that I sell here. Country, show tunes, classic rock, and other genres unrelated to what I sell on Turntabling are of little interest. The ONLY exception to that rule is when weird or unsual albums are involved.

Beyond The Black Rainbow Soundtrack

Beyond The Black Rainbow is being described as “Stanley Kubrick Meets David Lynch”, and the cinematic equivalent to LSD. Made in 2010, it’s only now hitting selected screens in the USA and it looks–and sounds–pretty amazingly strange. In other words, right up our street here at Turntabling.net

One of the most interesting things about the film (trip-a-delic visuals aside), from what can be gleaned out of the official trailers, is the amazing soundtrack by Jeremy Schmidt. He did an interview way back in September, 2011 about his work on the soundtrack for Beyond The Black Rainbow and even, tantalizingly, hinted at a vinyl LP release of the soundtrack.

From the trailer, Schmidt’s work is deliciously analog and calls back to the trippiest of 80s/90s synth experimentation. It’s not emulating Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Clint Mansell or YMO, but it does occupy a similar musical zip code. Sadly, this vinyl treasure proves elusive. For now. But we have high hopes that it will be released eventually based on the buzz over the film and its limited screenings.

Have you seen the trailer for this? It looks nothing at all like 2001, The Holy Mountain, THX 1138, Scanners, or Eraserhead, but it has spiritual ties with all of those and more.

Sound Dimension Mojo Rocksteady Beat (Double vinyl LP)

Soul Jazz presents Sound Dimension doing two albums worth of rock steady reggae. If you know Soul Jazz, chances are good that you’d be willing to take a chance on this unheard and unseen–as we did. The Sound Dimension are described as the overseas equivalent to Booker T and the MGs or The Funk Brothers–they did the same kind of daily grind studio session work. Hear them in top form here…

Billion Dollar Brain Original Soundtrack Vinyl LP

Richard Rodney Bennett’s soundtrack for the Michael Caine spy thriller. Some people are completely into this soundtrack, while others are completely unaware of it. It’s a bit overly symphonic in places, but the tracks Anya and Love Scene are Morricone-esque enough to get the attention of Maestro fans, and that’s good enough for us! Nice stuff indeed.

Francesco De Masi Inglorious Bastards Soundtrack Vinyl LP (Quel Maledetto Treno Blindato)

This is NOT the soundtrack for the Quentin Tarantino movie Inglorious Basterds. Instead, what we have here is a sealed, new reissue on Get Back Records of the ORIGINAL movie Inglorious Bastards, directed by Enzo Castellari, with soundtrack music by Francesco De Masi. Italian soundtrack lovers, here’s a treat for you!

Halloween II Soundtrack LP by John Carpenter

John Carpenter’s sequel to the original creepy classic is every bit as good, but in totally different ways. This soundtrack LP is highly sought after and with good reason–Carpenter couldn’t really go wrong at this stage in the game.

If you haven’t seen the movie in a while, have another look. Donald Pleasence is fantastic as the obsessed Dr. Loomis, and he really winds up giving the business to The Shape at the end–one of the most memorable takedowns in horror movie history.

 

Plan 9 From Outer Space Soundtrack Vinyl LP

How FUN is this record? For some Ed Wood fiends, you’ve got an instant party when you drop the needle. But the album sounds are only part of the fun. The packaging for this includes Bela Lugosi glowering at you from one side of the record, and Tor Johnson grimacing from the other.

So yes, this record is suitable for framing. As much as the idea makes some collectors cringe, it’s certain there ARE people out there who would rather display the Plan 9 From Outer Space soundtrack album on the wall instead of taking it for a spin on the turntable.

It’s hard to blame them when you see Lugosi’s face on the record, it really is…

 

The Glove Blue Sunshine Vinyl LP (SEALED)

It’s probably rare enough that you’d find a copy of this in decent condition to begin with, to find a SEALED copy of Blue Sunshine by The Glove is pretty amazing. This collaboration between The Cure’s Robert Smith and Souxsie and The Banshees’ Steve Severin is essential listening.

If you liked either group, The Glove is a worthy footnote in the history of both acts. If you aren’t convinced, there are several YouTube clips to sample, here’s just one of them–a great collision of Souxsie/Cure styles.
