This is the view outside the famous St. Louis vinyl paradise, Vintage Vinyl–one of three stops on Day One of the first-ever Turntabling vinyl road trip from hell. It’s tough to choose name for this–Vinyl Road Rage 09 sounds like some dumbass MTV show, and Vinyl Road Trip sounds so bloody generic…whatever. The finds are the important thing.

And what finds there were! I’m on a bug hunt for the strange, the unusual, the unmistakably freakish and wrong…and a few dub and soundtrack LPs, too. One the freaky front, there was no shortage of material–who on EARTH thought THIS was a good idea?

I mean, sweet JESUS, this clown looks like he’s about ready to take some hostages and start screaming “DOG DAY AFTERNOON!”

And then there’s this little beauty, discovered in the “educational/how-to” LP section at Vintage Vinyl amid the typing instructional LPs and the “My Life In My Own Words” album by Douglas MacArthur. No commentary needed here, but I do want to meet the family that’s putting this idea into practice. And buy a half ounce off them:

I have plenty to write about both Vintage Vinyl and Record Exchange, both located in St. Louis, but I’ll save those for another post.  I just wanted to get something up here and say to all the new followers on Twitter and such THANK YOU FOR THE RE-TWEETS! I really appreciate it. To recap…I am now in full road trip mode, on a vinyl hunt that started out in Chicago and will go round trip via St. Louis (today’s leg), Springfield and Joplin Missouri, Oklahoma City and Norman OK, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, Texas…whew!

Escape From New York vinly LP OST

Now for sale at Turntabling: The Dagored release of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York. This is a gorgeous vinyl version of the OST written by John Carpenter, featuring some great unreleased tracks.

Carpenter scored many of his own films including Halloween, but this electronic beauty is 80s synth-heavy and has some nice ambient touches. The only complaint I have with this soundtrack is that Carpenter didn’t include Isaac Hayes (who played the heavy) into any of the main soundtrack elements–can you imagine what kind of funk Hayes would have brought to this?

This release came out in 2001, remastered and expanded from the original 80s version, and how about that cover art? It gets better–the gatefold cover is in the usual Dagored style, so if you’re a fan of these releases you shouldn’t be disappointed here.

Some sites are flogging this for $30. You can buy this sealed, new copy of the 2001 Dagored re-issue of the Escape From New York soundtrack here for $23 plus shipping. Don’t miss the trailer below–if you’re undecided about getting this, check out the fat analog synths on the trailer and just TRY to resist. They truly do not make trailers like this any more…unless your name is Quentin Tarantino.

Blow Up Soundtrack LP vinyl Herbie Hancock

This is the 4 Men With Beards re-issue of an all-time classic. Blow Up features Herbie Hancock in the high point of one of his most creative and inventive periods, long before he ever touched a synthesizer–it’s great stuff. And the Yardbirds work on here is worth the price alone.

All in all, this is an excellent sonic portrait of Swinging London, and anybody who’s a fan of the Easy Tempo series deserves to pick up a copy of this for themselves. You’ll find people trying to collect upwards of $90 for a Blow Up soundtrack, but this much more reasonably priced edition seems to be getting scarce. WTF: Worst Album Cover Ever?

I’m not saying a DAMN thing about this album cover except to ask who hates this guy so much that they let him put this photo on the cover without so much as a “Are you SURE?”

I mean, REALLY. This is one of the most cringe-making images used to sell ANYTHING, ever. The name of this record is “I’m Here” but the artwork on this one makes you want to be anywhere BUT here. There have been countless armies of people with bad judgment putting their images on albums for decades, but none so ill-advised or poorly thought out.

It goes without saying that there wasn’t an art director on this…but I hope nobody let this one hit the shelves uncontested. Continue reading WTF: Worst Album Cover Ever? →
