Twin Peaks Soundtrack CD for Sale

Audrey asks if the juke box music is too dreamy, not knowing that this is actually named Audrey’s Dance outside of the fictional town of Twin Peaks. Creator David Lynch had actress Sherilyn Fenn in mind when he created the coy, love struck, rich girl, Audrey Horne.

The actress does not disappoint as Audrey.  She performs this scene as a young woman yearning to be an adult, ordering coffee, for a childish reason (Agent Cooper loves coffee). She doesn’t realize that swaying to music in public may get you some strange looks. She still is impulsive and dances to her music when the mood strikes her.

Most of the music of Twin Peaks, represented in the diner, in dreams, and throughout the series, has the smokey room, 50s jazz combo feel. No one listens to the pop styles of the 80s or 90s here, not even the teenagers.

Once in a while there’s the sound of a twangy guitar, fingers snapping, or a stray reed instrument.  It is of an era that, by 1990 is definitely out of place, much like the town. It is the past reinvented for the present (circa 1990). Below is the gently haunting theme from the first season.

Turntabling has a CD of The Original TV Soundtrack of Twin Peaks Season One for sale —first come, first served.

Manhunter Soundtrack Vinyl LP

Brian Cox discusses his work as Hannibal Lecter in the film Manhunter. He also reveals why he’s not envious of success of Anthony Hopkins has enjoyed with the character.  This is an interesting interview with a fine actor, who explains why he has no regrets about his work in a fine adaptation.

Manhunter was a 1986 adaptation of the book Red Dragon, directed by Michael Mann. ‘Dr. Lecktor’  has a small, yet pivotal role in the film’s complete story. The action’s main focus is the FBI pursuit of  the serial killer called ‘The Tooth Fairy’. The audience gets to visit the killer and view him as a multifaceted individual with a motivation to stop his rampage.

Manhunter is an excellent, pop inspired 1980s soundtrack. Fans of the television show Miami Vice know that Michael Mann weaves action angles and music like no one else.  His choices of songs and incidental melodies inject color into a story, even when the subject matter is dark and violent. There’s a lot of energy to this soundtrack to accompany steady rise of suspense, unease, and body count.

The band Shriekback, a favorite of Turntabling, appears three times on this album. They add a sinister and sensual groove to the film. Here is Evaporation (after a :15 commercial)

Finally, what is an American ’80s soundtrack without at least one hark back to the ’60s? When I find one, I’ll tell you.  Until then, Manhunter has a cut of Iron Butterfly’s In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida that is shorter than the original (8:19), but long enough to cover an intense series of events in the film. This version is a great choice for the dance floor (you know, bring out lots of different people).

Dimitri Tiomkin Guests On The Jack Benny Program

For fun, I thought I’d share this clip from the Golden Age of Television. Here the soundtrack composer of Town Without Pity and High Noon guests on an wacky episode of The Jack Benny Program. He can hardly keep himself from cracking, at first, but is quite funny by the end of the show. Benny’s composition and violin ‘skills’ show up often in his series to antagonize many guests.

I’m a big fan of Dimitri Tiomkin. I’ve been one since hearing David Bowie’s version of Wild is the Wind on Station To Station. One of most romantic songs of the budding New Wave movement was actually written the 1950s.

Town Without Pity is classic played in many films, including John Waters 1988 version of Hairspray (that soundtrack makes us shimmy).  I found out recently that the song is from a 1961 film by the same name. I was embarrassed not to know about this film years earlier. I caught it late night, a few years ago.  It’s not for the young ones, but there’s a lot of edge of your seat action.

I like comedy shows where famous people play themselves. The Jack Benny Program was know for playing with the sitcom structure. Tiomkin was certainly a unique choice of guest for a comedy sketch. He gives a great performance. The dog is gorgeous too.

Turntabling will keep an eye out for this composer’s soundtracks and keep you posted if any end up for sale.
